Mind Maps - A Powerful Approach To Note Taking

Mind map of the mind map guidlines.Image via Wikipedia

Mind map is a trade mark of the Buzan Organistion, ltd. In the UK and the USA. And it was popularized by Tony Buzan. Mind map can be used by not only students but by people in any stream. This will be helpful to remember the things that we have to accomplish. We can even use this method while going for presentation for making notes on key words instead of using too much of papers.

Mind map:

A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged radially around a central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid in study, organization, problem solving, decision making and writing.

The elements of a given mind map are arranged intuitively according to the importance of the concepts, and are classified into groupings, branches, or areas, with the goal of representing semantic or other connections between portions of information.

Uses of mind map:

Mind Mapping is a useful technique that improves the way you take notes, and supports and enhances your creative problem solving.

By using Mind Maps, you can quickly identify and understand the structure of a subject, and the way that pieces of information fit together, as well as recording the raw facts contained in normal notes.

More than this, Mind Maps encourage creative problem solving, and they hold information in a format that your mind finds easy to remember and quick to review.

Mind Maps abandon the list format of conventional note taking. They do this in favor of a two-dimensional structure. As such, a good Mind Map shows the 'shape' of the subject, the relative importance of individual points, and the way in which facts relate to one another.

Mind Maps are more compact than conventional notes, often taking up one side of paper. This helps you to make associations easily. And if you find out more information after you have drawn the main Mind Map, then you can easily add it in.

Other uses:

  1. Summarizing information
  2. Consolidating information from different research sources
  3. Thinking through complex problems
  4. Presenting information in a format that shows the overall structure of your subject.
  5. They are very quick to review as you can often refresh information in your mind just by glancing at one.
  6. They can be effective mnemonics: Remembering the shape and structure of a Mind Map can give you the cues you need to remember the information within it.
  7. They engage much more of your brain in the process of assimilating and connecting facts, compared with conventional notes.

Guidelines to draw mind map:

  1. Write the title of the subject you're exploring in the center of the page, and draw a circle around it.
  2. As you come across major subdivisions or subheadings of the topic draw lines out from this circle. Label these lines with these subdivisions or subheadings as lines.
  3. As you "burrow" into the subject and uncover another level of information i.e., further subheadings, or individual facts belonging to the subheadings above, draw these as lines linked to the subheading lines.
  4. Finally, for individual facts or ideas, draw lines out from the appropriate heading line and label them.

Improving Mind Maps:

The following suggestions may help to increase its effectiveness:

  1. Use single words or phrases for information.
  2. Use color to separate different ideas.
  3. Use symbols and images.
  4. Using cross-linkages.

Mind Mapping is an extremely effective method of taking notes. Mind Maps show not only facts, but also the overall structure of a subject and the relative importance of individual parts of it. They help you to associate ideas and make connections that you might not otherwise make.

So I suggest everyone to use this mind map technique to enhance their creativity in problem solving and decision making.

The Benefit of Mind Mapping your goals in the Workplace

Are you trying hard to climb the ladder of social or financial success? How is this going? Much of the reason why it may seem so difficult to move upward fast is probably because of your lack of goal setting.

Most successful people created a plan of their future. They wrote down their relevant and achievable goals. This helps them to know where they are going and what they should be doing.

The use of a mind map will aid you in assessing your goals, plans and yourself. From this you create your own personal GAME PLAN!

Why you use a mind map? Mind mapping is a remarkable way of organizing your thoughts. It helps you to transform them into useful information that will guide you through your daily responsibilities. You can apply mind maps to the simple task of planning your activities for the day to creating a life-long plan that will show and probably determine your future. This simple yet effective method is a powerful tool that will help you in getting faster results. It will guide you through life and with achieving your goals. This may be your in professional but of course also in your personal life.

Personal Goal Setting with the Use of Mind Maps

Goal setting is a powerful method to envision your future and motivating yourself. By knowing what you want to achieve in your life, you will be able to identify what's really important and where you should concentrate your efforts on. Setting your goals will enable you to cope with the distractions and irrelevant concerns that usually limit you from realizing significant results.
Even better is mind mapping your goals. This way you will have a visual picture on what you want to achieve and what your options are in achieving them.

Properly set goals are incredible motivators that could help you develop self-confidence. This encourages you even more to pursue your goals as you realize positive outcome instantly.

Steps in Goal Setting

1. Start by identifying a lifetime mission that gives you an overall perspective that shapes all other aspects in your life.

Set goals in some of these following categories:
Attitude - What are the positive traits or outlook in life that you possess and can develop further to help you in achieving your goals? Are there negative attitudes or habits that hinder you from moving forward?
Career - What do you want to achieve in your career? What do you need to do to enhance your efficiency and productivity? How will you advance in your work and how long should it take?
Education - Are there skills or information that you need to acquire to help you move forward in achieving other goals?
Financial - How much do you want to earn? How much do you need to live comfortably?

2. Set the smaller goals you need to achieve in the near future that support your lifetime mission. Identify a 5 year plan, 1 year plan, 6 month plan, to 1 month plan that are anchored in the main plan you previously developed.

3. Make a daily plan to guide you through your everyday activities.

4. Daily or weekly review your plans and modify them if necessary to reflect your changing priorities and experiences.

Planning with the help of mind maps will give you a bird's eye view on your long-term and short-term goals. As well as help you in organizing your resources. Having a better insight in the goals you set will help you see where you are at the moment, what you need to do, and where you are going.

Mind-map showing a wide range of nonhierarchic...Image via Wikipedia
Growth in information and communication technologies (ICT) has brought an immense impact in the way education is imparted in today’s world. Elearning has emerged from being a radical idea to a mainstream-learning tool. The pervasive nature of Internet has helped in easy availability of sophisticated elearning technologies. The vast movement towards elearning is motivated by the extensive advantages that it offers to both the students and the professionals.
Elearning websites are a boon to this stressed out generation. Gen Z is turning to the Internet for help in learning and study support. New innovative websites are providing digital teaching aids to improve the teaching process. Various learning tools like Mind Maps, SLMs, Live Class, and Test Centre are making it easier for the students to study, comprehend and grasp intricate topics with considerable ease.

Mind Maps for students are important study tools as they augment the learning procedure and makes studying and understanding complex topics easier. These are graphical representational tools, which can be used to organize complex concepts through association and diagrams using key words. These simplify the learning method as our mind has a power to retain better through graphic and visual association.

Our brain functions best when it compares, integrates and synthesizes what is shown to it. It associates every word with an image or a concept. The mind forms associations almost instantaneously, and "mapping" allows you to write your ideas quicker than expressing them using only words or phrases. Various studies have proved that thinking visually improves our memorizing potential. These infact improve our creativity and foster innovative thinking pattern.
Mind Maps give an overview of large subject thus making memorizing the key points better. Through this tool, a picture gets embossed on our minds, thus, making it easier to recall. It becomes easier for the students to remember large amount of information through remembering a concise, but descriptive Mind Map. Due to their aesthetic appeal, students find them easier to recall, enjoyable to look at and study. Their attractive layout catches the eye and retains our attention, which makes it all the more easy to remember them.

Other than Mind Maps, Smart Learning Modules also facilitate learning. They aim to simplify the subject and reinforce understanding with the help of various graphics, animations and presentations. The chapters are explained using these methods, which aid in increasing the student’s attention and the subsequent retention powers. The contents are mapped as per class; subject and chapter that in turn form an immense help for a systematic study program.
Live Classroom imitates a classroom, which means that classes take place in real-time and connect the subject experts and students through the Internet. Students can solve their queries and interact with online tutors who are available 24x7.

In addition, Test Center is another pivotal feature of online learning. It comprises of previous years solved board papers, model test papers and practice papers to name a few. This exhaustive bank of questions help the students in assessing their concepts by taking regular tests and thus makes them more confident in facing the exams.

Mind Mapping for Project Managers

Sometimes I am asked about the software I use for managing projects. The answer to this is that I use a lot of software! I use different software for different purposes and the software I use may change depending on the project that I'm working on and the sort of project management expectations there are for that project. If someone were to ask me the question 'if you could choose only one software application for project management then what would it be' then I would have no hesitation in saying Mind mapping software.

Mind mapping software is by far the most fun, versatile and simple. I use mind mapping software for many key areas in project management. I have listed some of the applications of mind mapping software for you to consider:

Project Planning - a product breakdown structure diagram is usually one of the first things I create for a project. Providing a graphical representation of the deliverable items in a project is extremely useful. Mind mapping applications allow you to lay out the project deliverables in a hierarchical manner, include project activities or tasks and then export these to create the initial project plan

Project Reporting - reporting to a project committee or project board using a mind map is always well received. Mind maps allow addition of graphical icons and indicators to show status.

Meeting notes - creating a mind map on the fly is fast and easy - which is just perfect in a meeting situation. Better still, you can export your map to a text based format in a flash and there are your meeting minutes completed before you have even left the meeting. What a great time saver!

These are just a few of the uses of mind mapping software that can help you with achieving project management success. There are certainly many more - consider issue management, risk management and recording of quality acceptance criteria for project deliverables.

There are some great commercial packages out there but if you look around on the net you'll find there are some equally great free packages - yes, one of my favourites is a free application! So look around and try out mind mapping if you haven't yet discovered it. It really has changed the way I create project documents.

How much time do you need to spend on your Mind Map?

Mind-map showing a wide range of nonhierarchic...Image via Wikipedia

Most people encounter difficulties when making mind maps. Many first timers, often will be tempted to give up after only several days of trying this technique. When you are less patient and less persistent you will end up making excuses. These will be something like you do not need to sacrifice your time and energy on something with little relevance in your life...

Whenever you reach this point of desperation, I ask you to stop. Take a step back before doing anything radical. Ask yourself what you might have done wrong. You know that mind mapping can give you a fresh perspective on your information and life. It can truly change your life and make it better. So it is worth a lot to pursue it.

You do not need to rush yourself to perfect the way you map your information. As you can see it is your own personal journey and no one can dictate how much time you should spend on doing it. Make it your own and allow it to work for you.

Benefits of Practical Mind Mapping

The amount of time that should be spent on making a mind map varies from one person to another. Mind mapping is not a one-time deal and you will not master it overnight.

Once you familiarize yourself with the technique you will become more effective and efficient in this. That's when you will see the true beauty of visually mapping out your information. By helping you sort out all the information that flows in your mind, your map maps enables you to devise better ways to achieve your goals.

Do not aim to make a perfect mind map. The reason for this is simple: There is no perfect visual map! Your knowledge on how to efficiently use your map is most important. No need to focus too much on less essential aspects that may lead you astray. That is what I call practical mind mapping.

The Process of Practical Mind Mapping

With practical mind mapping methods you are guaranteed effective results that will truly lead you to success in all facets of your life.

Use the following simple steps:

  1. Determine the purpose of your mind map. Identify what you want to map out and know what you are doing. When creating one, you should always have a clear goal in mind.
  2. Create the basic structure of the map. A clear structure is needed to make full use of your information. An effective structure makes it easier to read and to add to your map. You might even say form follows function!
  3. Organize the information by adding details to the mind map. Properly categorize all the information in your mind map. Indicate the keywords that spontaneously appear on your mind. Carefully relate them to other keywords that will be the basis of the activities you will undertake.
  4. Decide what is important by determining the relationships between pieces of information. Draw lines between important pieces of information. Never hesitate to use colors in emphasizing the importance of these relationships.
  5. Use and update the map as often as needed. Regularly review you map before starting your daily routine. Spend a minute or so to get your thoughts together and do some updating when you find it necessary.

The time you spend on your visual overview is all worth it. Remember this when you reap the success that you only dreamed of before. Mind maps are powerful thinking tools you should use in your daily life.

You can make use of it to plan your future and help you achieve your goals. With just a tiny bit of patience you will surely find, understand and use the essence of it all. You will discover that an effective mind map is the key to arranging your life and give it order.
